Art Scene – March 10

The Method and The Magic.

The history of artistic expression is as old as the Paleolithic cave paintings and as new as our Fourth Annual Battle of the Walls exhibit that opens tonight. The art students from 5 area high schools have transformed our gallery. Each artist took their place in that long line of storytellers, filtering their experience through a visual medium and a method that is exact, transforming the moment. The chronological age of these artists has little to do with their ancient understanding of the human experience and the in-the-moment grasp of their time.

We are honored to have these gifted artists share over 80 pieces of original work and we invite you to meet them tonight at the Art Center at 5:30 for the artists’ reception. At 6:30, you will part a wonderful moment when we announce the winners of the Art Guild scholarships and continuing education awards.

Ira Shore and The Summer of Music

Next Friday night at 7:00, it’s all about great music and one great musician. The music and comedy of Ira Shore promises a fun evening. Ira and special guest, Rita Shore, will help up us launch our Summer of Music 2017 fundraising with this free public event. You can bring a donation to help us deliver the largest and most popular annual event.

In addition to Ira, Rita and their musical magic, we will announce our 2017 Summer of Music lineup and we think you’ll be as excited as we are with this roster of local and nationally recognized standout bands. Come to the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts, 601 East 6th Street from 7:00 – 8:15 and enjoy beverages, snacks and the sensational Shores!

Your Audience Awaits

Dancers Dancing, our biggest dance performance and annual showcase, is set to dazzle on May 12 and 13 at the Jeannie Miller Theatre at Glenwood Springs High School.

Every year we celebrate the articulation, agility, strength and beauty of our dancers who are committed to their art. This year is special – it is our 25th Anniversary and it promises to be a sold out house and that is a great opportunity for you to let over 1,500 people know about your organization.

Our Dancers Dancing ads are now on sale and we are offering a great deal. When you buy one ad space you’ll get half off on an ad in our Cleo Parker Robinson program! This international dance legend, executive artistic director and choreographer of the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble will bring her company to the Roaring Fork Valley this summer. Her goal, like the Center for the Arts, is to foster appreciation, access and the development of new audiences for dance and to ensure the arts are carried on by future generations.

Contact our design genius, Brie Carmer, and discuss the ads that are right for you. The 25th Anniversary and Cleo Parker Robinson’s Dance Ensemble events are poised to have standing room only so there isn’t an easier way to reach one very big audience!

Showstoppers Indeed

Congratulations to every member of our troupe who competed against 900 dancers at the regional Show Stopper Dance Competition last Friday. They performed 29 original pieces of choreography with 85% of the work placing in the top 10. We were awarded 7 double platinum, 9 platinum and 13 gold. That, my friends, takes us to the national competition in California in July.

Great job everyone!

Christina Brusig is the Executive Director of the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts. She can be reached at christina@glenwoodarts.org.
